January 24, 2014 Toronto, Ontario – Taekwondo Canada was delighted to hear that Own the Podium will invest a total of $ 150,000 over one year to support the future and development of high performance taekwondo in Canada.
The funding was granted following the establishment of Taekwondo Canada’s performance forecast and the likelihood of medal results at the Rio Olympics in 2016.
“We are delighted with the decision of Own the Podium . This announcement allows us to see that we recognize the work of our athletes, as well as that of our high performance team who have created a comprehensive plan to maximize the potential for podiums and excellent results on the international stage. »- Eva Havaris, President and CEO of Taekwondo Canada
This announcement complements a most successful year in terms of funding and support for the association, as well as for Canadian athletes and coaches.
Last December, the organization secured funding from the COC Athlete Excellence Fund awarded to Canada’s top taekwondo athletes and podium hopefuls: Jasmine Vokey, Yvette Yong, Marc-André Bergeron and Tyler Muscat.
A month earlier, the CIBC Succession Team program chose to invest for three years in athlete Yvette Yong to support her to continue to represent Canada on the world stage.
Petro-Canada has also provided funding through its Fueling Athlete and Coaching Excellence program. Finally, Sport Canada chose to continue supporting Taekwondo Canada by granting it $ 49,000 to reach its medal targets at the 2015 Pan Am Games.
This increased support proves beyond any doubt that the organization is on the right track and that the Canadian taekwondo community is working well together.
